Characteristics and Properties

This chemical compound is a derivative of a dipeptide consisting of amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine.

It is a high-intensity, modern, general-purpose sweetener, 7,000-13,000 times sweeter than sugar.

It is white crystalline powder, soluble in water, heat-stable.

Neotame vs Aspartame

Neotame® sweetener is an innovative development of the American NutraSweet Co. Being a derivative of aspartame, Neotame is designed as a sweetener, intended primarily for use in the food industry, in contrast to its prototype, distributed directly as a table sweetener for the end user. Unlike aspartame, which is 200 times sweeter than sugar and registered as a nutritious caloric additive, neotame has not only a higher intensity of sweetness (on average 40 times sweeter than aspartame), but also low caloric content. This is a non-nutritive food supplement - less than two percent of calories in an equivalent amount of sugar.

It was first authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA, USFDA) in 2002. According to the FDA, it meets all safety standards, carries no risks to health. It is allowed for all groups of consumers, including children, pregnant women and those suffering from diabetes. Rapidly metabolized and completely eliminated from human body.

In Russia Neotame was registered in 2012 as a safe food additive E961 in TR TS 029/2012 "Safety requirements for food additives, flavors and technological aids" as a sweetener, flavor enhancer and fragrance.
